Whats the point of a brain? A fundamental question that has led Professor Daniel Wolpert to some remarkable conclusions about how and why the brain controls and predicts movement. In a recent talk for TED, Wolpert explores the research that resulted in him receiving the Golden Brain Award.

The sea squirt, a type of marine filter feeder, swims around looking for somewhere to settle down for the rest of its life. Once parked on a rock in a suitable spot it never moves again. So the first thing it does is eat its own brain. While this may seem a little rash to some, for Professor Daniel Wolpert it makes perfect evolutionary sense.

To me its obvious that theres no point in the brain processing or storing anything if it cant have benefits for physical movement, because thats the only way we improve our survival says Wolpert.

When most of us think of bath salts, we picture something we add to a hot bath to help soothe our tired minds and bodiesnot something that could result in a flesh-eating bacteria. But, thats what happened to a 34-year-old woman who injected the stimulant drug called bath saltsnot to be confused with the kind that we pour in our tub.

Reported in the journal Orthopedics, the New Orleans woman showed up at the hosptial with a painful, swollen arm after attending a party. Doctors said she had a skin infection from a small puncture wound and put her on antibiotics, which seemed to help for a couple of days, but then the woman returned to the hospital saying the swelling had returned.

To the Editor:

The Athens City Schools and many Ohio school districts are sorely in need of revenues. We see talented and dedicated teachers and teacher aides positions eliminated or threatened in Athens County. We read of the recommended closing a gem of a school and community, Chauncey Elementary.

There is a way that this school system and every school system in Ohio could save enough money to avoid such deep budget cuts. The new budgeting would take at least four years to fully institute, but would then save around $3 million every year for the Athens City Schools. The strategy: elect reform-minded legislators to the Ohio Assembly who would support single-payer health care in Ohio.

SIR Elton John has signed a book deal to tell “the very personal” story of “his life during the AIDS epidemic”.

Love is the Cure: Ending the Global AIDS Epidemic will include Elton’s memories of friends, including Queen singer Freddie Mercury, who lost their lives to the illness.

Sir Elton said he hoped the book would help “break down social barriers and build bridges of compassion” about AIDS.

AMT’s hemophilia B program, which consists of an adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector containing the human factor IX gene, is being investigated in a Phase I/II study conducted by St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (
